The bench

A firm this size cannot keep every specialism on a payroll and pretend otherwise. What it can do is hold a bench, know exactly who is on it, and put the right one in front of you rather than the one who is free.

   The engineer who arrives has configured the thing you run. For a historian that means somebody who has built one, not somebody who read about it on the way to the meeting.

   A gas terminal and a dental group have nothing in common except that both are badly served by a generalist. We keep separate people for them.

   More through a diligence or a cutover, less in a quiet month, without you carrying the cost of the peak all year.

   The UK, North America and Europe, so a plant in one time zone and a fund in another get the same person on the same call.

We sell a product that checks people once and then keeps checking. It would be an odd thing to sell without running it on ourselves, so every engineer who touches your estate goes through it.

How we work

Half of this is culture and half is method, and the method half is unusual for a technology firm: most of our senior people came up in operations rather than in consulting.

• Lean and Six Sigma

  Engineers who have run continuous improvement on a production line see waste in a process the way they see it in a system. It is why the first answer is often to remove a step rather than to automate it.

• Root cause, not symptom

  A fix that stops the alarm and leaves the cause is a fix that comes back, usually during the quarter it is least welcome.

• Senior only on delivery

  Nobody is learning on your estate. If somebody junior is on the work they are watching, and somebody senior is accountable for it.

• The scoper does the work

  The person who tells you what it takes is the person who then has to do it, which is the only reliable discipline on an estimate.

• Written down as we go

  Documentation produced during the work rather than promised after it, because the version promised after it never arrives.

• We will tell you not to buy

  Our service pages say when a recruiter, a vendor's training or a permanent hire is the better answer. That is not modesty, it is what makes the rest of it worth reading.

We do not publish the firms our advisors come from, or their names. A person who advises a supplier while working for a fund is owed that discretion, and a page that traded on their names would deserve to lose them. They are in the room on the calls where it matters.

The person you meet is the person who does the work. Delivery engineers are introduced by name on the call rather than here, and our client list stays private, so what you can judge us on is what we say we do and whether the first two weeks bear it out.
